January News in Miss Gilsenan's class

12th Feb 2019

What a busy month January was!

The children started off the year by taking a closer look at their local area. We went for a research walk to Hill Street and looked at the different buildings and landmarks that they could see. The children were excited to tell everybody about a time where they visited these buildings with their families but were also very interested to hear about buildings and landmarks that they hadn’t seen before.

This research was a wonderful stimulus for our learning throughout the curriculum. In Literacy, the children have been learning to write more independently – a strategy which is very important at this stage of Primary 2. They have been writing exciting reports about the different places they saw on their adventures to Newry.

In Numeracy, the children have been exploring practical methods of adding and subtracting teen numbers as well as using physical resources to help them solve problems.

In Learning through Play, the children used research from their walk in lots of different zones. They worked wonderfully in groups to build different buildings that they saw – the finished products made us feel like we were standing in Hill Street! In our creative area, the children were doing observational drawings using the pictures that they took.
