St Clares Abbey Primary School, Newry

November in Miss Gilsenan's Class

5th Dec 2018

Another busy month in Primary 2 – the children have been wonderful!

In Literacy, the boys and girls have been learning all about different stories from familiar settings. After discussing what was familiar to us, we decided to take a walk around our local area of Newry. We saw lots of different features and buildings that were very useful to use in our own writing. The children have also been using ‘Wow Words’ to help them describe different characters in the stories that we read.

In Numeracy, the children have had a particular focus on subtraction, exploring it practically using counters, number lines and Numicon. We have reminded ourselves of what different coins look like and have even used our skills to work out different ways of making a coin. As well as this, we have also started to learn about weight and how to use balance scales to measure and compare different objects.

In Learning through Play, we have been exploring stability. We started our topic with a walk to a local bridge by the Town Hall. From this, the children have been doing wonderful observational drawings, have started to explore clay and have even used old boxes and cardboard to build a bridge that was big enough for our toy ship to go under. Our problem solving skills were certainly put to the test!

I am really looking forward to see what December has in store for us… all things Christmas!!
