A Summary of the Roots of Empathy programme
Roots of Empathy
What is it?
Roots of Empathy is an international, evidence-based classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among schoolchildren by raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. The program is designed for children ages 5 to 13 and here in St Clare’s Abbey we had the opportunity to explore this gorgeous, interesting and worthwhile programme. Thirty Primary Five pupils fully enjoyed availing of this programme once a week. Maureen (Course instructor) visited our classroom, along with Ciara (mum) and baby Eabha.
How it worked?
Each pupil had to observe Eabha’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. In this experiential learning, Eabha was the “Teacher” and a lever, which Maureen used to help the group identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. This “emotional literacy” taught in the program lays the foundation for safer and more caring classrooms, where children are the “Changers”. They are more competent in understanding their own feelings and the feelings of others (empathy) and are therefore less likely to physically, psychologically and emotionally hurt each other through bullying and other cruelties.
In the Roots of Empathy program children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus building contribute to a culture of caring that change the tone of the classroom. Maureen also visited us before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit.
Research:
“Education is the most effective peace-building institution in the land. Our schools serve as our Ministry of Peace.” – Mary Gordon, Founder/President, Roots of Empathy
Research results from national and international evaluations of Roots of Empathy indicate significant reductions in aggression and increases in pro-social behaviour. Roots of Empathy educate both the mind and the heart. The Roots of Empathy curriculum addresses the affective side of education, but the activities have many links to the classroom curriculum. For example, students use math skills when they calculate and chart the baby’s weight and measurements. Literature, e.g. story books, is used as a way to open the door to feelings and perspective taking. The discussion and reflection that follows builds solidarity and empathy. Art plays a large role as children paint their inner feelings which they cannot say with words. Music stirs powerful feelings. It speaks to everyone regardless of language or culture and builds solidarity.
Having spoken to the Primary Five Roots of Empathy group the comments below indicate how successful the programme was.
“I know now that babies need a lot of help always. They should never be left alone. Taking part of Roots of Empathy programme helped me realise the importance of a person’s needs and that EVERYONE should be treated with respect.” Ava Rose Jones
“I really enjoyed the programme. I now know how to look after babies. Their needs are so important. It really helped me to learn about different feelings and how I should act. Baby Eabha is just adorable!” Micheal McAteer
“The Roots of Empathy programme inspired me to be kind to babies. I loved learning about how a baby grows and develops. I like that we closely discussed different feelings and how we tried to relate these feelings to ourselves.” Marissa McNeill
“I loved watching baby Eabha sleep, eat, sing and laugh. She looked so cute. I know that it is important to work with other people and listen to them. Everyone’s actions and feelings are so different. I have to respect that.” Emily McGennity
