October in Mrs McKeown/Mrs McGokdrick's Class.
Welcome to our October News
In Numeracy the children have been working hard on their counting skills while counting forwards and backwards within 20. We have explored numbers before, after and between other numbers within 20. We participated in group work exploring pictographs and interpreted key information within each pictograph. Great work was carried out touch counting and grouping objects into sets within 20 and we loved exploring everyday language to describe position, direction and movement. We have made a great start investigating Problem Solving tasks within Numercay.
In Literacy the children distinguished between fiction and non fiction texts and the different purposes for reading them. We know the purpose of captions and enjoyed reading and writing captions. We are also working hard on writing sentences using appropriate punctuation; finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. We listened to a gorgeous shared story ‘The Best Gift of All’ and discussed the story setting and the animals that lived in the forest. Wonderful imaginative writing was completed by each pupil. The class then had a ‘showcasing’ activity and the children read what they had written to their peers. Pretending to be a woodland creature and writing creatively was exciting. We then explored another autumnal book and decided to make our own Primary 2 class non fiction book based on St Clare’s Abbey’s Forest. We included a title page, contents page, key facts and a blurb. We are very proud of our class Non Fiction book on the forest and enjoy reading it during silent reading.
Play Based Learning has been super fun during October. We were building, inventing and creating in the Construction Zone. In the Classroom we were mixing colours with paint, joining and connecting with different materials. In the Investigative Zone we were scientists exploring how things ‘rot’. Building and making pathways in the Sand Zone and investigating pouring and splashing in the Water Zone has been fun. We also investigated what will happen when you add sand and water together.
We also enjoyed Halloween activities and a class party.
