St. Clare’s Abbey Primary 7 Leaving Day Poem

‘Twas the day of our leaving and all through the school

We were feeling emotional but tried to act cool

Our uniforms had hung by our bedsides with care

And we knew it was the last time that they would be there

We children all hurried up to our rooms

Enjoying the day while our future looms

And while our teachers called out the names of the class

We remembered the years that are now in the past

‘Twas the year in the nursery when outside the door

We whined for our mums as we missed them some more

We ate up our snacks and went out to play

Then were called back in to wash the mud away

The next couple of months had flown by

Almost within a blink of an eye.

When our year in the nursery had come to an end

We knew we had made some very good friends.

‘Twas the year in P1, when all through the classes,

The teachers had started teaching us maths.

Up in the Abbey we coloured with care,

In hopes that a sticker would soon be there

We children were happy learning fun new things.

And together we learned new songs to sing.

P1 is over - not the youngest anymore.

I can’t wait for P2 - opening a new door.

‘Twas the year of P2 when we children had fun

More letters and numbers we were second to none!

‘Whoops a Daisy Angel!’ was the girls’ Christmas play

It’s funny the memories we have of that day

And we went to the farm on our end of year trip

But on the way home we were down in the lip

The bus had broken down with us all in the back

But we sang a few songs and had plenty of craic

‘Twas then time for moving into Primary 3

We were getting big now, my friends and me

And we happily sat in our schools on our own

The Abbey full of boys and St Clare’s - girls alone

But on Thursday afternoons our fate was sealed

We had to check out the school across the field

They all decided that we had to be friends –

I suppose it worked out ok – in the end.

‘Twas then time for P4 and all through the year

The boys met the girls, we were both full of fear.

But excitement spread as our schools joined together

And now we hope we’re together forever!

We threw away the brown and the blue

The black, the red and the amber too

We put on our new uniforms and wear them with pride

And here we stand together – side by side.

Mrs Rocks and Toner and Cribbin and Davey

Mrs Russell and Crozier and McKeown and Donnelly

Miss Rocks and Mrs Tierney, O’ Hanlon and Griffin

McGoldrick, Ms Duffy McParland and Byrne

Digney and Doherty O’Hanlon McVeigh

Ms McParland and McCoy to end this day

Mrs Monaghan and Mr Sweeney in charge of this place

With able assistants to keep us all safe

‘Twas the year of P5, we were in Key Stage Two

Our work got harder we had much more to do

We studied Egyptians,  sometimes that  was funny

Remember the tomato we made into a mummy!

And we started new lessons, we were learning to swim

We had visions of ourselves athletes at the gym

And then on board we kept a tight grip,

As we went to Portaferry on our school trip.

‘Twas now time for P6 and what we can recall

Were tests upon tests in front of us all

We had homework all week days, we were used to that trend

But then we got more over every weekend!

We learned about Vikings and we worked really hard

And we longed to get out to our big school yard

The summer was brilliant – oh how the sun roared

As we worked through the heat and the temperatures soared

‘Twas the start of September – we were nearly eleven

And so quickly - we’re sitting in Primary Seven

We’re the top of the school and in charge of the yard

We studied Charles Dickens and Shakespeare, the bard

We problem solved in Maths - that was the best

We had lots and lots of homework and lots of tests

Then we worked so hard for our Christmas Play

And gathered in the Cathedral on our Confirmation day

‘Tis the day of our leaving and here in this hall

Our parents are gathered with love for us all

Their faces are turned up and looking with joy

With hearts full of pride for each girl and boy

The teachers here too, they’re willing us on

Can’t believe in an hour that we will be gone!

And so as we leave here we say with a sigh

Thank you to you all and to all a goodbye!!!
