Trocaire Better World Award
We are delighted to be one of three schools in Ireland to win the Trócaire Better World Award, awarded to us by Trócaire for our whole school exploration of Trócaire’s Climate Justice Education resource.
As part of our Award, we received a hand painted Batik, created by a local person in Nicaragua, one of the many places in which Trócaire provides invaluable support.
Many congratulations and thanks to all the staff and pupils involved in achieving this award!
Climate Justice By Sophie O'Hanlon
Why is climate change happening?
Today in our world we are facing a terrible threat; our world is changing because of us. Carbon Dioxide or CO2 that comes from us, volcanos, dead plants, trees, animals that have been under the ground (also known as fossil fuels) when burnt releases CO2 into our Ozone layer which keeps the warmth of the sun this is called the Greenhouse Effect, which is making our Earth warmer and making our Polar Caps melt.
How is it affecting us?
Climate change is affecting our lives with more storms, floods and droughts which are making it hard for people that live at the coast and the famers who are having trouble with the rain and droughts coming at the wrong time of the year, so they have to move to the city to get money for food.
Why should you care?
The reason you should care about climate change is we are making it hard for the people in the south of our Earth to survive because they are becoming homeless because of the storms and floods.
What can we do to stop it?
We can try to stop Climate Change by reducing the use of fossil fuels, leave the car at home, and plant more trees/vegetables at home, school and work.
Can you help?!?!
