P4 WW2 Visit to Newry Museum

21st Mar 2025

Mrs Cribbin’s class

Primary pupils visited Newry Museum to learn more about World War 2. The children were so excited to take a step back in time and have an immersive experience of what life was like in Newry and the surrounding areas during this time.
The children were treated by Miss Agnew, from the Women’s Institute and Mr King who was an Air Raid Warden. The children were fully engaged and really got a sense of what life was like during WW2. They learned about the ‘blackouts’ and what to do when the air raid siren was sounded. They located air raid shelters in Newry City on a map and were amazed that there was one on Hill Street. They boys had a go at using bandages as injured soldiers and the girls had a go at the ‘running stitch’.

The children found out more about rationing and were able to view some of the foods on offer to families during this time. Afterwards we were able to view some very interesting artefacts that had been donated to the Museum from local people in the area.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to consolidate the learning that has been taking place in class.
