January Mrs Mc Parland’s Claas

5th Feb 2024

We returned to school on Monday 8th January and tried our best to settle back into school routine after the long Christmas holidays. Francis the squirrel also returned!

In Literacy this month we learnt the sounds, r, u and q. Mrs Mc Parland read the story ‘Ridiculous’, we discussed the characters and the repeating phrases in the story, then we labelled the characters. We also enjoyed the story ‘A Quiet Night In’ for the q sound.

In Numeracy we worked on number 10 and consolidated our learning using Topmarks.co.uk on the interactive whiteboard and Ipads. We have been introduced to money and the 1p coin. We bought items under 10p using 1ps. We also discussed time and the language associated with time,- present, past, future, the clock face, big hand, small hand and O’Clock then we made our own clocks. We continue to order consecutive numbers, count forwards, backwards and find the number after and before.

We brought our toys to school on Friday 26th January to support our school council fundraiser, we were very good at sharing.

Our play topic is ‘Castles’. Mrs Mc Parland displayed various castles on the whiteboard and we discussed the shape, size and materials used to build them. We constructed our own castles in the indoor construction area, built castles in the creative classroom using duplo and joining and connecting materials and made labels to put on our creations! We also used paints and charcoal to produce observational drawing of castles.

Catholic schools’ week was  21st - 27th January, the children talked about their grandparents and focused on “How they help and love us.”

Leo O’Brien told the class ‘my nanny gets me from school on Thursdays.’

Sofia - ‘Granda takes me to school and granny gives me coco pops when I go home’.

Eve Mc Loughlin  - ‘I have two Nannie’s and they love me.’

Leo Mc Evoy -  ‘My nana gives me tea and biscuits and I dip the biscuits in the tea.’

There were a lot of windy and icy mornings in January and we didn’t get to explore the school forest until 29th and 30th.

Thank you boys and girls for working very hard on your high frequency words during January.

Special thanks to the parents who attended the parent- teacher meetings.

Mrs Mc Parland.
