Mass Rock 26th June 2016

The Annual Mass Rock Celebration of the Eucharist will be held at Ballyholland on Sunday 26th June at 3.00pm.

Mass Rocks were used to celebrate ‪Mass‬ in secrecy during the 17th and early 18th centuries when laws prescribed crippling fines or imprisonment for people caught participating in Catholic worship. Priests risked even more severe punishments, including death.

When enforcement of these laws waned, the Mass Rocks were abandoned and often forgotten. The Mass Rock at Ballyholland was rediscovered in 1909 and the parish pilgrimage has taken place every year since 1954.
