Primary 6 Technology Insight Day.

23rd May 2016

The Primary 6 girls were invited to St. Mary’s High School to participate in a technology insight day.  They had a fabulous day thanks to Mr Morgan and his team.  St. Mary’s provided a delicious snack and lunch for us all.

Our project was to make a car J. We began our technology task by cutting around the template and attaching this to corruflute.  We used a safety rule and a crafting knife.  It had to be very precise.  We went into the workshop to saw out pieces of wood with a coping saw…that was VERY exciting!! We used a vice to keep our piece of wood in place.  We also had to saw our piece of metal with a junior hacksaw.  Then we filed it to make it smooth. We were like engineers!! The metal was hot after we cut it because of the friction.  We had to use and enormous drill to make holes in the wooden sections so we could attach our pieces together.  We added a pulley and wheels; that was our chance to hammer.  We loved that part of the day.  It might have been the teachers’ least favourite part!!  We had to cut some wire and strip it to expose the wire inside the plastic.  This makes it conduct electricity.  The tricky part of the day was soldering the wire to the battery connector.   We had to be really careful and had to sit for this task and of course wear our safety glasses.  We made a circuit so our battery could make the motor work.  We attached our motor to the chassis, put the batteries in the motor and hey presto!!! We had super fun racing our cars.  Thank you to the St. Mary’s Team for a fantastic day.  We learned so much.
